Common questions

How long do I have to sue on a broken contract?

Generally four years for a written contract (Code Civ. Proc. § 337) and two years for an oral one (Code Civ. Proc. § 339), usually counted from the breach. A contract can shorten those periods if the shorter period is reasonable, so check the agreement itself before relying on the statute.

Can you review a contract the other side wrote?

Yes. We mark the terms that carry risk, propose changes, and can negotiate them for you.

Do verbal agreements count?

Many do, but some must be in a signed writing to be enforced, including agreements that cannot be performed within a year, leases longer than one year, sales of real property, and promises to pay someone else's debt (Civ. Code § 1624). A sale of goods for $500 or more generally needs a signed record (Com. Code § 2201). Even when an oral agreement is valid, its terms are harder to prove.
